STOP SETTLING IN LIFE. Why (And How) I Decided To Stop Settling In Every Area Of My Life.

STOP SETTLING, never settle, never settle quotes

    “To Live is the rarest thing in the world, most people exist. That is all,”- Oscar Wilde  

…ponder over that quote for a moment.

It is one of my favourite quotes of all time. And ask yourself:

                                 ARE YOU LIVING OR ARE YOU SIMPLY EXISTING?

What is the difference between living and existing?

For me, existing is settling in life. Living day to day with no sense of purpose or excitement for what the day has in store.

Existing is:

  • complaining about your day ahead
  • not wanting to get up from bed to head to work
  • not taking care of yourself and listening to your intuition
  • being afraid of taking the steps necessary for living the life that you have always imagined for yourself                                   

                 If you’re dissatisfied with any area of your life, what are you doing about it today?

Everyday when you wake up, you make one of two decisions:

  • You decide to live passively: doing the same things that keep you exactly in the same place you are now, reinforce a “I wish I had…” mentality, and leave you wishing for more, 

OR

  • You decide to live purposefully: making multiple decisions during the day that make you a stronger person, advance your goals, and make you happier.

We lie to ourselves when we settle. We agree to accept the unacceptable. We lower our standards.

We have learned to settle: in our life, our careers, our relationships. Why?

BECAUSE WE ARE AFRAID.

We are afraid of letting go of the things and people that no longer serve us.

We are afraid of the unknown.

Afraid of change.

Afraid that if we let go of the things/people, we will be left alone;

                   without financial security, without companionship, without family.

EXISTING IS LIVING LIFE IN FEAR.

SETTLING IS LIVING LIFE IN FEAR.

 

I realized I was settling in life a couple of years ago.

I was afraid.

And I was afraid to admit that I was afraid, too.

But once you take a step towards living your life, on your own terms, you will never look back and will wonder why you ever chose to settle in the first place.

                                                  THE HARDEST PART IS TAKING THE FIRST STEP!

THE VERY 1ST STEP: MAKE A FIRM DECISION TO NEVER SETTLE! Tell yourself that you will no longer settle in any part of your life.

I’ve always known myself to be fearless. I’ve never strayed from my gut before. My subconscious consistently proves to know me best. I view it as my own personal divine built-in navigation system. It’s loyal and dependable.

I sabotaged it. I settled and settled, and I fed it with lies. The poor thing could no longer determine right from wrong and I was lost without it.

And that’s why I stopped settling. I need that thing, to be up-and-running. So that I can live my life. My way. The way I wanted to live it.

So from then on, I made a decision to listen to my intuition. If I knew deep inside that  it wasn’t what I wanted, or it wasn’t heading me towards the life I want to live, I would simply say NO.

Everyday decision I made from then one was made by keeping that inner voice in check.

 Yes, I know what you are thinking…………It’s easier said that done! It’s not easy. In fact, it is one of the hardest things to do. 

It will be challenging at first.

Discomfort

Anxiety 

Fear

Negative Mindset 

It comes as a package deal unfortunately. You have to get through those to get to where you want to be.

                                                  THIS IS NOT AN OVERNIGHT TRANSFORMATION.  

It will take time, patience and a strong mindset to get there. Don’t give up. Fight the hurdles that come you way.

OBSTACLES ARE THE WAY!

I am still not where I want to be in my life, but everyday when I wake up, I make the decision to live PURPOSEFULLY. At the end of everyday I ask myself:

                           WHAT HAVE I DONE TODAY TO GET ME TO WHERE I WANT TO BE?

I try and challenge myself everyday by signing up for new classes, trying something new with my business, trying to find ways to grow my blog, meeting new people.

This month, I took on swimming lessons to get over my fear of diving, started kickboxing, started learning photoshop. These are just some steps I take everyday to get me to where I want to be.

    Great article. When I was reading it I also thought, each of us need to learn what our definition of existing and living is as well. All too often we see people trying to exist by following another’s journey to happiness and self discovery. I guess the most important thing, like you said, is to be true to yourself and follow your inner intuition, not meet another’s interpretation of living..
